NEOnet partnered with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) for The Central Ontario Orthophotography Project to gather aerial images for the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) project.
Twenty-one communities, the Wahgoshig First Nation, and the Temiskaming Shores Health Unit are participating in this project.
After discussions with the MNRF, NEOnet was able to include Northern Ontario in the imaging flights that were originally designated for Southern Ontario.
Imaging flights departed from the Timmins Victor M. Power Airport on May 24 and traveled along the Highway 11 Corridor to Hearst, and South to Temiskaming Shores.
The flights acquired 20cm resolution, multi-spectral imagery that is accurate to 50 cm on the ground.
Project Coordinator, Laura Imhoff says, “partnering with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for the COOP 2016 project has resulted in substantial savings for the municipal partners in our GIS project.”
“The GIS project enables municipalities across our catchment to build capacity because they will have access to high-quality data that can be used to map community assets, plan emergency services and improve record keeping,” Paul Ouimette, director of operations
The NEOnet GIS project will benefit the municipalities involved because it provides them with immediate access to information that will allow for better decision-making, improved communication, and greater efficiency.
Enabling communities to become more competitive and streamlined via ICT is one of the ways that NEOnet works to improve the economic, social and cultural fabric of Northeastern Ontario.
