Hockey game helping out 6-year-old Alyssa

The showdown is happening January 30 at the Sportsplex

A hockey showdown is raising money for a local family.

Wednesday, Jan. 30 the Timmins Flyers Midget A Hockey team is taking on members of the OPP, Timmins Police, and firefighters to raise cash for the family of Alyssa McGaghran.

The puck drops at 8 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Admission is by donation, and there will be a 50/50 draw, prize table, silent auction, and door prize.

Six-year-old Alyssa has a rare genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis complex.

According to the Timmins Flyers, “Alyssa has tumors in her brain, heart, kidneys and behind her left eye. Alyssa requires regular visits to Sick Kids and has been there over 40 times.”

She is in her second year of school at Ecole St-Dominique.

“Since May Alyssa’s seizures have been very controlled due to a Vegas Nerve Stimulator. Since the VNS was installed, Alyssa has been more alert, attentive, and more energetic. Everyone is hopeful that Alyssa will continue to make progress,” reads the poster. “Alyssa inspires us every day with her resilience and beautiful smile. Alyssa is lucky to have her older brother Brendan who is 10. Brendan is an awesome big brother and always helps mom and dad make sure his little sister is OK.”

The charity hockey game is a tradition for the Flyers.

A number of TPS officers are playing in the game.

Corporate communications co-ordinator Marc Depatie said it speaks to the community spirit that the team has.

“A serious and rigorous training program is underway, and to quote every other sports interview you’ve ever heard, we’ll be firing on all cylinders, we’ll be winning the small battles, puck control is key, and we’ll following our game plan to light the red light as often as we can,” quipped Depatie.
