Hollinger mine train back in Whitney Park

The historic locomotive was restored over the winter

A part of Porcupine’s history is back where it belongs.

The Hollinger gold mine train that's been a fixture in Whitney Park at the corner of King Street and Bellemare Street has returned home after Gorf Manufacturing Contracting Ltd completed repairs.

The train was put back in the park on Aug. 6, and the Timmins Museum and the city will have an official unveiling event on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m.

The locomotive was used in the Hollinger mine to haul ore from the site. It is part of a larger display that includes the mine’s original vault, which was part of the mining recorder’s office, a drill, and an old electric engine.

The vault is also getting some TLC, and the city has plans to place informational plaques in the area to expand on the story of these artifacts along side the plaque detailing the Porcupine gold rush.

The budget for the restoration project is $40,000, which includes all of the work being done.

Work on the train started in September 2023 and was expected to be completed this spring.
