An annual count of moose is underway.

From December to February, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) staff are doing aerial moose surveys, which helps the province monitor the population.

"Survey information about the number, age, and sex of moose is used to inform moose and habitat management," reads an MNRF news release.

"Most of our survey flights will take place over Northern Ontario, but we will also survey areas around Bancroft, Parry Sound, Bracebridge, and Peterborough, among others."

For the program, staff look for moose and their tracks in fresh, deep snow. That means that the inventory depends on having the right weather conditions and enough snow in the bush.

The surveys are flown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. within 12 to 72 hours of a fresh snowfall of at least 30 centimetres.
