TIMMINS - The lights are out for thousands of people in Timmins and area.
In the Porcupine area, the power went out around 6:15 a.m. While it did flicker on for a short period after 7 a.m., people are still in the dark as of 7:30 a.m.
Hydro One shared on X around 7:40 a.m. that the outage is affecting about 35,000 customers in Timmins and Kapuskasing.
"Please continue to check back for updates as more information becomes available," reads the post.
The Hydro One outage map shows outages across the City of Timmins. It also indicates outages extending to Matheson and the Horwood Lake area, Gogama, and from Moonbeam to Opasatika.
The estimated restoration times are 9:30 to 9:45 a.m.
Timmins Police is asking people not to call 911 about the outage. It is monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.
The North East Tri-Board Student Transportation buses in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing and Hearst are not running this morning.
District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) schools are open if there is hydro.
The Northeastern Catholic District School Board's schools are all open, including St. Joseph School in South Porcupine and St. Patrick School in Kapuskasing.
Conseil scolaire catholique des Grandes Rivières buses are also cancelled. Its schools are open in Hearst, Mattice, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane and Ramore.
