Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus is tired of bullies.
During a peaceful protest in front of the Russian Embassy marking the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Angus was recorded arguing and swearing at reportedly pro-Russian individuals.
“2025 will be the year that we stand up to the bullies and put the run on them,” said Angus. “This was my little way of doing my part to make Canada a better place.”
On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. The Ottawa event Angus was recorded at was at the Russian Embassy to mark the anniversary of the invasion.
Angus said the protesters at the embassy were peaceful, and the other man in the confrontation on the video was using Russian propaganda and rhetoric against Ukraine.
“Given the violence that’s been inflicted on Ukraine, I’m not going to listen to this, so I gave them a piece of my mind,” said Angus in a phone interview with TimminsToday. “These are the same guys who harass people on the streets every day. They harass public officials.”
The video shows Angus and the crowd chanting “fascist” at the other man in the video, who also captured the incident on his phone.
Angus said the man and his companions had approached him and others in the crowd, asking questions about Canada’s support of Ukraine in the war against Russia.
“They demanded to know if Canadians would be paid back their taxpayers' dollars for helping people fight a war against a fascist regime, I’m sorry, this isn’t a reasonable conversation,” he said. “They’re just showing up to be a complete idiot troll jerk, and that’s how I explained it to them.”
Angus said the rest of the day and the event was a beautiful display of solidarity and support for Ukraine.
“People in Ukraine have suffered horrific violence and crimes of war,” he said. “We had a really good gathering, and it was a peaceful gathering about showing the connection between Canada and Ukraine.”
In recent months, Angus has been very vocal about the US government’s tactics, criticizing President Trump and discussing how Canadians can oppose such behaviour.

“I think that they’re getting defensive because they’re not controlling the narrative anymore,” he said. “Canadians are standing up to bullies.”
He said that the video shows some of the frustration that is happening with him and other Canadians, at that those showing support for Ukraine and other communities facing violence shouldn’t have to deal with this.
“Peaceful people are here, and they shouldn’t have to put up with this kind of crap,” he said.
