A couple of Northern Ontario towns are getting provincial cash to improve their roads this year.

Kirkland Lake is getting $2.9 million for its Connecting Link work in 2024-25, with Kapuskasing getting $3 million.

In Kirkland Lake, the funding is to reconstruct Government Road West (Highway 66) easterly from Goldthorpe Drive. The Kapuskasing project is to resurface Government Road (Highway 11) from Riverside Drive to Bonnieview Road.

Connecting links are designated roads and bridges connecting two ends of a provincial highway through a community. This year, 19 municipalities are receiving $30 million for projects.

"Safe and reliable highways are vital links that connect people in our region to their jobs and homes. They also provide the critical link to goods and services that so many northerners rely on," said Timmins MPP George Pirie in a news release.

"Our government will continue to provide the funding northern communities need to ensure our highways and transportation infrastructure are maintained for generations to come."
