KIRKLAND LAKE - After declaring a state of emergency yesterday, Kirkland Lake says the situation has "significantly improved".

In an update this morning (April 13), the town said that water levels at lift stations have subsided and the system is effectively managing flow. The snow that followed the rain, however, is adding more complexity to the situation.

"During the emergency, affect residents received support from the fire department, ensuring those who needed assistance were accommodated. Individuals without alternative housing were provided with overnight lodging for their safety and comfort," reads the update.

"Throughout the night, the dedicated roads department staff worked tirelessly to install a rock wall to safeguard roads from erosion and damage caused by flooding. This morning, the staff will assess affected roads to determine if further remedial action is necessary."

Under a rainfall warning yesterday, Kirkland Lake declared a state of emergency after a creek started overflowing and overloaded the sanitary system.

People in the area shared video and photos of people canoeing down flooded streets.

Because of the snow that followed the rain, the town says road conditions may be compromised by the combination of snowmelt and flooding.

"We urge residents to exercise caution and avoid rivers and streams during this period of heightened water levels. Please continue to stay away from affected areas as town crews monitor these areas. Additionally, please continue to monitor your homes and reach out to neighbours who may require assistance," said the town.

In an emergency, call 911.

Residents who are in the affected areas and need information or help can call 705-567-3400 ext. 2.
