Latin culture celebrated, organizers say more events to come

'We want to get the names of the Latin community in Timmins ... We want to keep in touch with everyone'

The Latin community in Timmins is sharing its culture with the community and there's more to come.

An event this weekend celebrated Latin music, food and culture. The event was held in collaboration with the Timmins Multicultural Centre and held at the Timmins Museum: NEC.

Participants were encouraged to dress in the traditional fashions of their home country, and food from those places was shared with the attendees.

Stews, desserts, salads and other dishes from all over Latin America filled the room with delicious smells, and the music kept people clapping and tapping their toes.

“We are very excited about the success of the event, and there is much more to come,” said Liz Margarita Atensia Castro, who was one of the organizers. “This was the first, but it won’t be the last."

People from Chile, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, India, Syria and others took part in the event, and pride from every country was ever-present.

“It’s a beautiful way to share and build community,” said Jaspreet Kuar, the welcoming communities co-ordinator for the Timmins Multicultural Centre.

Building community was at the top of the list of things to do for many of the attendees, and there was a call for those within the community to leave their name with the organizers.

“We want to get the names of the Latin community in Timmins,” said Nataly Morales. “We want to keep in touch with everyone.”

Organizers are also looking forward to taking part in the multicultural festival on May 28 at the McIntyre arena.

“We are looking forward to the festival,” said Castro. “We want to show Timmins who we are.”
