Heather Campbell, owner/publisher of northern Ontario's only English language literary trade publisher Latitude 46 Publishing, has been recognized by the North Western Ontario Writers Workshop (NOWW) with the Margaret Philips Award.
The Margaret Phillips Award award was first established in 2009 to recognize a “builder,” either a group or individual who has made outstanding contributions to publishing, promoting, or supporting the literature of Northwestern Ontario.
The intent is to recognize those who support the practice and community of writing, as distinct from the Kouhi Award, which recognizes writers.
"Thank you so much for noticing!" said Campbell in her video acceptance speech shared at the LitFest in Thunder Bay on Saturday, May 13. "I was thrilled and surprised to get the nomination for the Margaret Philips Award. This recognition as a builder in the literary arts, and I feel very much like a builder. The houses are up and people are living in them."
The awards ceremony was held at the LitFest 2023 Gala on Friday, May 12 at the Prince Arthur Hotel in Thunder Bay, and included visiting authors Anna Porter and Eric Walters.
Latitude 46 Publishing was established in 2015 by Heather Campbell and Laura Stradiotto, with a mandate to publish distinctive literary works by established and emerging authors with a connection to northern Ontario, as well as narratives about the unique landscape and culture of the region.
Campbell took full ownership in 2019 and the press has now published 38 titles to date. Authors include Danielle Daniel, Thomas Leduc, Rod Carley, Eleanor Albanese, Darlene Naponse, Liisa Kovala, Aurore Gatwenzi, Dieter Buse and Graeme Mount.
