The Matheson OPP detachment is closing, effective today, the OPP has announced.
Since May 2022, OPP says the Matheson detachment has been transitioning to the Iroquois Falls detachment. That transition is finalized today (March 31), said OPP in a news release.
The Matheson facility is one of the detachments under the South Porcupine detachment's umbrella. The decision to close the Matheson building was made during a recent review of northeast region operations that looked at efficiencies and reinvestment opportunities.
"It is important to note, the closure of the physical office in Matheson will not reduce frontline policing services within Black River-Matheson as the OPP continues to work closely with the community to address its needs. Police vehicles are now equipped with mobile workstations allowing officers on patrol to complete many administrative duties from within the cruiser and thereby reducing the need to return to an office," reads the news release.
The numbers to reach OPP remains the same — dial 911 for emergencies and 1-888-310-1122 for non-emergencies.
The Iroquois Falls OPP Detachment is located at 52 Critchley Ave. in Monteith. It's open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached at 705-232-4087.
