The Mattagami River boat launch.

A Timmins boat launch is getting some work done on it this summer.

R.M. Belanger Limited has been awarded the $1.2 million contract to repair the Mattagami River boat launch piers and retaining wall. The site has been closed from the public since the summer of 2023.

There was little discussion on the item that was approved at the June 4 Timmins council meeting.

The project includes removing and replacing the timber on the east and west piers, removing and replacing the concrete walls and foundations on the east pier, removing and replacing the concrete paving and light poles, removing and replacing the existing damaged. guiderails, repairing the cracks in the concrete launch pad, and adding structural changes to the existing steel sheet pile wall.

In this year's budget, over $2 million was set aside for the project. While it is under budget, director of growth and infrastructure Scott Tam said the city is holding onto the savings for now because the work is being done in the water and there may be unknown costs.

The city has also applied to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) grant to help pay for the project. The application is still being reviewed, but could cover up to half of the cost of the work.
