Editor's note: An updated story with the local hockey community sharing memories of Tixie Hannigan is available here.
A longtime fixture in the local hockey community has died.
To honour Dan "Tixie" Hannigan, the City of Timmins is lowering the flags at the McIntyre arena for the next three days.
The owner of Hannigan's Sports, he started sharpening skates in 1979 and was set up inside the iconic arena for more than 20 years.
Hannigan, who was proudly from Schumacher, was also known for his commitment to the community and often collected money for local organizations.
In 2019 interview with TimminsToday, Hannigan said his love of the game of hockey was too strong to keep him away from the rink.
