In what Mayor Steve Black called a 'very special moment' a local athlete was honoured at city hall on Monday evening.
Megan Mahon, who competed at the Rio Paralympic games in September, was presented with a large banner bearing her name. The banner was prominently displayed throughout most of the summer at the underpass near the intersection of Algonquin Boulevard and Spruce Street.
Black said Mahon made the entire community proud.
"She had a little bit of an injury, I think, going into the first game, and missed the first game, but came back in the second game and definitely upped the ante for the team, and added some strength as she played the entire game I believe, and did that a couple of occasions," he said.
Mahon competed in goalball. A sport designed for visually impaired athletes. A ball, similar to a dodgeball, that contains two bells is thrown towards a goal while three defenders must judge by sound where the ball is headed and attempt to prevent it from scoring.
She attended O'Gorman High School in Timmins, and is now attending Cambrian College in Sudbury.
After Black read a portion of her bio from the official Paralympic website, she was asked to come forward and receive the banner.
Mahon humorously said 'Where am I going to put it?' as the banner is quite large.
"Congratulations, you did us all proud, and it was a pleasure to watch your journey in Rio," said Black, and added that the city is hoping to see her compete again at the 2020 games in Tokyo, Japan.
