A Timmins park is getting an upgrade this summer.

Roy Nicholson Park is getting accessible and inclusive playground equipment. The $148,091 contract for the project design and installation was awarded to Park N Play Design Co. Ltd. at the July 9 Timmins council meeting.

"Anytime we can improve and enhance and maintain our parks, I'm fully supportive of that for our residents and I'm thrilled that we're moving ahead with this park and hopefully many more ... parks are very important to communities in many aspects physically, emotionally and otherwise," said Coun. Lorne Feldman at the meeting.

At the park located at the corner of Pine Street North and Eighth Avenue, there is a swingset and a play structure that the staff report says needs to be replaced.

"Replacing the existing play equipment will include updated and enhanced inclusive play stations for children of all ages," reads the report.

The project is costing more than expected.

This year's budget included $120,000, leaving a $29,091 shortfall, which is expected to be covered by $36,000 in savings from floor scrubbers.

The work is expected to start in August.

Coun. Bill Gvozdanovic also asked for an update on the equipment slated to be installed at the Fourth Avenue park in Schumacher.

The city has the equipment and is waiting for the company to install it, said clerk Steph Palmateer. While he doesn't have an exact date, he said it is supposed to be installed this summer.
