The skies over Timmins will have a different kind of show on Canada Day this year.

For the July 1 celebrations, the City of Timmins is partnering with the Bucket Shop and Northern College to host the first drone display in lieu of a traditional fireworks event.

“The City is working with Northstar Drone Shows to create a custom Canada Day show,” said facilities and recreation manager Lynne Grenon in a news release. “Drone shows are dog-friendly, better for the environment, and it’s something different for Timmins."

The festivities will take place at Gilles Lake from 7-10 p.m. on July 1, with the drones taking flight around 10 p.m. The McIntyre Coffee Shop’s food truck or Bubbles Fries will be there for late dinners or a snack, and there's a DJ and free Canada Day cake and cupcakes are being served up

The show is pet-friendly and family-friendly. People are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on.

More information will be available on the City of Timmins Facebook page.
