Hundreds of catholic school board employees in Northern Ontario have voted to unionize.

After a union organizing campaign, about 200 new members across the Northeastern Catholic District School Board have voted to join CUPE Local 4681 and CUPE’s 55,000 other education workers across Ontario.

“This is a great step towards improving wages and working conditions for Registered Early Childhood Educators, lunch monitors and paraprofessionals at Northeastern Catholic,” said Sue Cyr, CUPE Local 4681 president, in a July 8 release.

“We are thrilled that all of the education workers at Northeastern Catholic District School Board will now be unionized and have the power to advocate for improvements to working and learning conditions.”

Some of the new members are from municipalities such as Cochrane, Cobalt, Kapuskasing and Timmins.

According to the release, workers have brought forward various workplace issues they want addressed including wages, staffing concerns and working conditions.

More to come.
