Northern College is preparing to host its 29th Annual Awareness Day on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, at the Timmins Campus. Awareness Day aims to give students and members of the public a deeper understanding of the challenges and difficulties faced by people with disabilities.

“Awareness Day is an excellent opportunity for us to champion our commitment to maximizing access to education for all learners in our region,” said Dr. Fred Gibbons, President and CEO of Northern College. “Over 20 per cent of the student body use our Accessibility Services Centre, and with the dedication of our highly trained Accessibility and Advising Services staff, students are provided with the essential services required to achieve success at the college.”

The theme of this year’s event is “Accepting Our Differences”. Activities will begin with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m., followed by the highly-anticipated wheelchair rally from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Closing ceremonies and awards presentation will be held at 12:30 p.m.

“Team participants will learn that disabilities don’t have to stand in the way of someone achieving their personal, professional or educational goals,” said Shanna Lecuyer, Accessibility Advisor at Northern College. “We hope all attendees leave knowing that with perseverance and a strong support system, individuals at all levels of ability can achieve tremendous success.”

Members of the public are invited to register in teams of four by contacting Lucille Lachance at 705-235- 3211 ext. 2113 or [email protected].
