Number of calls to police are up this year

Here's a look a the calls for service in the last three months

The numbers are in and show a slight increase in calls for police services over the last three months.

Earlier this year, updates on the city-wide crime stats started being reported at Timmins Police Service board meetings. 

From May to July, the overall call numbers are up slightly. In 2023, Timmins Police received a total of 7,374 calls, whereas there were 7,005 during the same period in 2002.

Overall so far this year, from January to July, the number of calls is up 6.9 per cent, with 16,127 calls in 2023 compared to 15,080 in 2022.

There have been more overall calls for the past three months, compared to earlier this year and the same period in 2022. 

At the start of the year, January had the highest call volume, with 2,317. In May, there were 2,488 calls, in June there were 2,495, and July saw 2,391.

Calls about violent crime are fairly consistent from May to July 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. May recorded the highest volume with 108 calls. There were 75 in June and July. There were 256 calls over the same period in 2022.

Overall so far this year, the violent crime calls are down 6.5 per cent. From January to July 2023 there were 557, whereas there were 596 in 2022. 

Calls about property crime are down 5.4 per cent for May to July. In 2023 there were 640 calls, with 677 the year before.

May registered the highest number of calls at 227, with 211 in June and 202 in July. Overall from January to July 2023, calls are up 6.5 per cent. There were 1,472 this year and 1,381 during the same period in 2022.

Drug-related calls dropped 54.8 per cent in the last three months. From June to July, there were a total of 14 calls (3 in May, 6 in June and 5 in July). In 2022 there were 31 calls. 

Overall this year, there has been a 35 per cent decrease, going from 65 in 2022 to 42 in 2022.

Social disorder calls are up 5 per cent for May to July. July was the busiest month with 863 calls. There were 817 calls in May and 765 in June.

So far this year, the social disorder calls are up 6 per cent. There were 4,898 in 2022 and 5,194 from January to July 2023.

Traffic has seen a slight drop. 

From May to June 2023, there were 731 calls, compared to 759 in 2022. Overall this year, there have been 1,997 calls, whereas there were 1,998 during the same period in 2022.

The number of other occurrences is up. 

From May to June, there were 3,256 calls in 2023. In 2022 there were 2,955. From January to July there's been an 11 per cent increase, with 6,865 in 2023 compared to 6,142 the year before.

Other calls are occurrences that don't fall under the main categories. 

Because the section accounts for about half of the total calls the police service receives, Coun. Steve Black, who is a member of the police services board, asked if some of the bigger call numbers in that category can be broken out. 

"It just represents half our calls and I don’t like leaving half our calls under a blanket other category,” he said at the Sept. 7 meeting.
