One new wildfire reported near Kirkland Lake

Meanwhile a 889 hectare fire about 80 km west of Latchford that has been burning since August 3 is now under control

One new wildfire is being reported in Ontario’s Northeast Region on Sunday (Sept. 1).

Kirkland Lake 7, a 0.1 hectare fire, is about 50 km west of Kirkland Lake and it is under control.

Meanwhile Kirkland Lake 5, a 889 hectare fire south about 80 km west of Latchford that has been burning since Aug. 3, is also now under control.

Overall, there are 27 active wildfires in the region, five are under control and 22 are being observed.

“The fire hazard is low to moderate across the Northeast Region,” said Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services in a news release. “There is an area with a high fire hazard extending north from Nairn Centre to Wahnapitae to Pointe au Baril.”

Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resource is urging those having a long weekend campfire to keep safety in mind.

“Keep them sheltered from wind, two metres from vegetation and fully extinguished before leaving the area,” the ministry said in a social media post.

Northeast Region   

One new wildland fire was confirmed in the Northeast Region by early evening on Sunday, September 1:

  • Kirkland Lake 7 (KLK007) is located 3 kilometers east of Radisson Lake and 50 kilometers west of the community of Kirkland Lake. This fire is 0.1 hectares in size and is under control.

At the time of this update, there are 27 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region:  5 are under control and 22 are being observed.

Fire of note:

  • Kirkland Lake 5 (KLK005) is 889 hectares in size and is under control. This fire is located approximately 5 kilometres north of Stull Lake, 5 kilometres southeast of McKee Lake, and approximately 80 kilometres west of Latchford.

The fire hazard is low to moderate across the Northeast Region. There is an area with a high fire hazard extending north from Nairn Centre to Wahnapitae to Pointe au Baril.

No Drone Zone: Be safe, stay clear of forest fires!

Flying drones around forest fires is both dangerous and illegal. When you fly a drone near a forest fire, you can put the lives of pilots, firefighters and other emergency personnel at risk. Be safe, stay clear of forest fires.

When waterbombers approach a body of water, move close to the shore so they can perform their scoop safely. A waterbomber will not scoop from a lake or river if encroaching watercraft pose a safety hazard. Be safe, stay clear of waterbombers.
