People line up for a taste of authentic Italian baking

The annual festival draws a crowd

Timmins' Italian community filled the street with food and music on Sunday.

The sixth annual Festa Italiana street party wrapped up a weekend celebrating Italian culture with a bang, featuring the Dante Club choir, meatball sandwiches, arrosticini, and gelato after a successful market on Saturday.

“We opened at 11 a.m., and people started lining up at 10 a.m. just knowing they were getting authentic Italian baking,” said Dante Club secretary Alana Loreto. “The lineup was out the door.”

The Dante Club choir kicked off the celebration with the Canadian and Italian national anthems and  Mario Ciccone. said that performing is one of the best parts of the event.

“It’s a tie between singing and eating,” he said. “We’ve been doing this for a few years, and we are getting larger and large is nice.”

The Dante Club Choir welcomes new members, and anyone interested in joining can reach out to the Dante Club and ask for Mario.

While the choir performed, volunteers grilled lamb and sausages, roasted pork, and put together meatball sandwiches.

The festivities also featured a car show, with many vehicles coming to this event from the Rock on the River event yesterday.

Dante Club president Chris Loreto said the whole weekend has been a fantastic experience.

“Last night was great, the band was fantastic, and today there’s the car show and the food,” he said. “People are here, and they’re having a great time.”

The events will continue until 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.
