Downtown Timmins came together to celebrate its new Pride crosswalk today.
Located on Third Avenue at the Pine Street South intersection, the rainbow crosswalk was installed by the City of Timmins last week. Inspired by the Abbey Road, local officials recreated the iconic album cover to celebrate the launch.
“The response has been, for the most part, phenomenal. Unfortunately, there will always be those that don’t see the benefit, but they’ve been far outweighed by those that are supporting it, celebrating it and so encouraging of us,” said Cindy Campbell, Downtown Timmins BIA executive director.
The initiative started with Chrislynn Losier, who approached the Downtown Timmins BIA to put one near her business.
The city couldn't approve one in that location and instead talked to Fierté Timmins Pride about where a good location would be, according to Campbell.
At this location, she said, it can be included in the annual Pride parade.
Last week, Fierté Timmins Pride told TimminsToday that the crosswalk is exciting and shows there's been a lot of progress.
“It’s a very exciting thing. It’s something that the BIA decided to do, which is nice that it’s not always Timmins Pride that does all the work,” he said. “It’s nice to have such a visible piece of the community out there.”
