TIMMINS - Seniors needing a little boost to help stay warm for the winter are in luck.
Applications are open for this year's Keeping Seniors Warm program.
Run by the United Way Centraide North East Ontario, the program is open to Timmins residents who are 55 years and older who are in vulnerable living situations.
“We understand the unique challenges that come with aging, and it’s our goal to make sure that our older adult community members can be warm and safe this winter,” said Mary Lou Hussak, United Way executive director, in a news release.
“With the support of our donors, volunteers and local businesses, we’re excited to offer this vital service once again.”
The initiative launched in Timmins last year, and saw participants get a shopping spree (with a set limit) at Giant Tiger to shop for outdoor gear such as winter coats, boots, socks and mittens.

Applications are open until Oct. 14. People must be referred by an agency such as social services, church, home and community care, primary care or support worker. The full criteria are available here.
Participants who used the program in the last two years are not eligible.
