The Royal Canadian Mounted Police's investigation into whether there was a criminal element to the Greenbelt scandal has reached a point where current and former government staff are being interviewed, Premier Doug Ford's office confirmed on Friday.

Staff interviews by the RCMP were first reported by the Toronto Star.

"We’ve always said we would cooperate," a spokesperson for Ford's office said in an email. "That cooperation would include the premier and current or former staff conducting interviews as witnesses, which are currently underway."

The Greenbelt scandal shook the Ford government last year. Ford backtracked from the plan to remove 15 land parcels from the protected area after intense public pushback that was prompted by revelations about connections between government officials and developers who benefited that journalists and a pair of oversight offices uncovered.

The RCMP officially launched an investigation into the controversy last fall.
