Roads around a historic building in downtown Timmins remain closed after a devastating fire over the weekend.
A fire started at the Empire Complex the afternoon of Saturday, March. 23. This morning, a Timmins Fire Department aerial truck was still streaming water into the roof of the building on the southwest corner of Algonquin Boulevard and Spruce Street.
Roads in the area remain closed.
Algonquin Boulevard is closed from Pine Street to Brunette Road. Spruce Street is closed between Fifth Avenue and Third Avenue, although there is access to the Timmins Transit station and the parking lot just north of it.
Timmins Police is reminding people detouring around the area to obey all traffic rules.
For southbound traffic on Pine Street South, for example, there are no left turns at the intersection. The fine for drivers disobeying the posted signs is $150 and two demerit points.
Motorists driving on closed roads are also subject to a $150 fine and three demerit points.
"All of the rules of the road apply to the detoured streets and traffic services will be out enforcing them," said police in a news release.
The Empire Complex residents are being housed at the Bon Air Motel at 335 Algonquin Blvd. E.
The official process for donations, including material items and cash, is expected to be shared today.
