A couple of Cayden Kowal first period markers, including the eventual game-winner, helped propel the Powassan Voodoos to a 5-2 victory over the Timmins Rock in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Friday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Potting the night’s initial tally, the Voodoos’ Kowal took a pass in the neutral zone, wheeled into the Rock end, and after making a quick move to his left, ripped it past Timmins netminder Dryden Riley 8:41 in.

The goal helped Kowal extend a point streak to five in succession.

Powassan then went up by two after Kaleb Ellard chased down a puck dumped out of his own end and while speeding down the left wing, slid a feed into the slot to Heath Bradley, who moved to his right and shoveled in a backhand for his first NOJHL goal.

Continuing to click, Kowal kept it going for the home side as he whipped in a faceoff draw won by Caleb Dawson.

A goaltending change saw Graham Gee enter to commence the middle frame for the Rock.

Getting one back three and a half minutes into the second stanza, recently acquired Nathan Marincola scored in his Timmins debut as he got in behind the Powassan defence and roofed a shot over the glove of netminder Austin Seibel.

The guests then made it 3-2 on a man advantage as Zach Secord made a nice play at the blueline to keep a clearing attempt in the Voodoos zone, that led to Clark Scaddan snapping one in from slot to make it a 3-2 game.

Regrouping, the hosts picked up a fourth on the night thanks to Marcus Krats connecting while his side was up a skater as he buried a chance from between the circles at 16:07.

Third period play saw Nathan Pelletier ice it for Powassan with a late power play effort as he corralled a loose puck at the top of the crease and put it in with three minutes to play and wrap-up the scoring.

With the win, the Voodoos improve to 7-5-0-2 on the season, while with the loss, the Rock fall to 10-5-0-0.
