Do you have batteries or household hazardous waste to dispose of?
The household hazardous and special waste drop-off event is being held on June 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Timmins council recently approved an $86,913, five-year contract for Drain-All Ltd. to host the events.
The city report says the contract is for up to three one-day events in addition to the 2022 date. However, Manager of Environmental Services Scott Tam told council that the contract is for at least three events and that flexibility was built into the contract in case the city had to forego a year.
The drop-off days are typically held annually. Drain-All has been the city's provider for about eight years, said Tam.
The events usually see about 1,400 vehicles.
Last year's event saw 29,100 litres of paint, 1,000 kilograms of batteries, 1,00 litres of aerosols, 1,000 kilograms of fertilizer and pesticides, and 4,200 litres of automotive waste removed. The total cost was $98,501, with $61,674 in reimbursements, according to the city.
To host the event, the city needs a contractor with a valid mobile environmental compliance approval (ECA) to load, transport and dispose of the items collected. All of the materials are sent to an approved receiving facility.
While Drain-All had the highest score in the city's evaluation, it was not the lowest bidder.
The city says the three bids ranged from $74,181 to $103,285. The other companies that bid were not included in the report.
Tam said the city is also aiming to hold the textile collection on the same day as the hazardous waste drop-off.
