NEWS RELEASE

NORTHEASTERN CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

*************************
The Northeastern Catholic District School Board’s Timmins Transition Team has shortlisted the school name choices received over the past two weeks for the new Kindergarten to Grade 4 school in Timmins.

Tricia Weltz, superintendent of education and Transition Team chair, commented “We received 39 submissions for consideration. Thank you to everyone who submitted an idea and were active in the open submission process.  The Transition Team has met and engaged in deep conversation, research, and reflection to streamline the 39 ideas down to the final five names for the new Kindergarten to Grade 4 school in Timmins.”

The Transition Team is pleased to share the shortlisted five school name choices that are now available for you to review and choose one in phase two of the School Name Contest.

The school name choices are:

Pope Francis Elementary School
In honour of the Pope at the time of the consolidation, Pope Francis is widely and deeply loved for his faithful devotion and leadership in our Catholic community. He embodies compassion, acceptance, and understanding. By his example, we are called to be respectful and faithful servants to each other. He is a Pope for the people.

St. Teresa Elementary School
In honour of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, recently canonized, St. Teresa is known for her charity, selflessness, courage, and hard work. St. Teresa remains a symbol of love and compassion, and serves as a shining example of all Christian virtues.

St. Michael Elementary School
St. Michael is considered a strong and mighty warrior. He is the leader of all angels and is invoked for protection. His name is associated with strength and perseverance.

St. Gianna Elementary School
St. Gianna is known for her incredible sacrifices, vocation, love, and family.  She is considered to be a powerful role model for the Church and the world today.   She provides to us a strong example of the values and virtues of Christ.

St. Mary Elementary School
In this name we recognize the name of Mary, a woman prepared by God and continually surrendered to His love.  She is our model as well as our spiritual mother.  Mary is ever present at the side of each person, giving nourishment and hope to all.

The Catholic Elementary School Naming Contest is open to all students, staff, our Catholic School partners (ie. Catholic School Councils and Parent Councils, Parishes, C.W.L., etc.), parents, family members and all members of the general public.
