Science camps get $46K boost, Pirie visits Timmins campers

The week-long science camps are expected to attract 4,400 campers in 35 communities this summer

A popular summer camp sparking an interest in science is receiving a provincial boost.

Science North has received $46,000 for its 2024 summer science camp through Ontario's summer experience program.

Timmins MPP George Pirie stopped by the camp at Lionel-Gauthier School in Timmins this week.

"It was great to see so many smiling faces at the Science North summer camp hosted at Lionel-Gauthier School in Timmins. I’m proud of our government for investing in this important institution, where kids can create memories and young people can gain employment experience. It’s exciting to see children in the Timmins region having fun and getting inspired by the fascinating world of science," said Pirie in a news release.

While Science North is based in Sudbury, week-long summer camps are held in communities across Northern Ontario.

Last year, the organization says it reached the most children and communities ever.

That number is expected to grow again this year, with an anticipated 4,400 campers in 35 communities.

"We are thrilled to receive this generous investment from the Ontario Government. This funding allows us to expand our Summer Science Camp program and provide valuable employment opportunities across Northern Ontario. Together, we are empowering youth to explore their passion for science and inspiring the next generation of innovators," said Ashley Larose, Science North CEO.
