Timmins now has a central portal for seniors looking to access services or programs. The new Seniors in Timmins website has officially launched and makes finding information about all things relating to seniors easily accessible – visit seniorsintimmins.ca.

The Cochrane District Social Planning Council recently received funding from the Government of Canada, as a part of the New Horizons for Seniors Program. The funding program supports projects designed by and for seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and their communities.

Stemming from feedback gathered from the Timmins Age-Friendly Report and Strategy, the Seniors in Timmins website helps to fill the gap in accessing information regarding health, well-being and community engagement for seniors and their families. With the number seniors in the Timmins area increasing, knowing about available services and programs is increasingly important to this growing population.

“The Seniors in Timmins website is a great place for older adults to find information about services and programs to help them remain engaged in the community, and is very user friendly,” said Laura Imhoff, co-chair of the Timmins Age-Friendly Advisory Committee. The Timmins Age-Friendly Advisory Committee is a group dedicated to healthy aging and improving the quality of life of older adults in Timmins. Comprised of different service providers, the group works to implement the Timmins Age-Friendly Strategy.

The Seniors in Timmins website makes finding information easier and covers three areas:

  • Upcoming events
  • Volunteer/job opportunities
  • Services and programs

“It lets providers advertise their programs and services, while giving seniors the tools and information needed to stay healthy, active and engaged with their community,” said Susan Raymond, Program Coordinator for the Seniors’ Recreation Centre. “The Seniors in Timmins website is a great tool for seniors and their families to have up-to-date information and supports healthy aging.”

She sees the website as a great opportunity for those in the community and local service providers to connect, build stronger community connections and find needed services.

Non-profit organizations and business that provide services for older adults can purchase advertising space on the website.

Advertising spaces are being offered at an introductory rate of $1 per month for non-profits and $2 per month for businesses for a three-month term. For more information, contact Trisha Turner at 705-531-7233 ext. 300 or [email protected].
