SIU investigating Matheson crash

Police say driver of a traffic complaint seriously injured in collision

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after a serious crash near Matheson.

According to the South Porcupine OPP, officers from its Matheson detachment were called to a driving complaint today (Sept. 24) at 11:17 a.m.

"The driver was located and soon afterwards was involved in a motor vehicle collision with another vehicle on Highway 11 in Matheson. As a result, the driver from the traffic complaint was seriously injured in the collision," reads an OPP news release.

OPP say they contacted the SIU, which has invoked its mandate. 

The SIU is a civilian agency. It investigates incidents involving police when there is a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Highway 11 south of Matheson remains closed for the investigation.

The OPP Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) are helping with the investigation.

Police expect the highway to be closed for a several more hours.

Northbound traffic should detour through Highway 572, and southbound traffic can detour on Highway 101 in Matheson to Highway 672.
