The winter storm warnings have hit the Timmins area.

A snowfall warning is in effect for Timmins, Cochrane and Iroquois Falls.

The Environment Canada alert says that there will be significant snow starting this afternoon (Jan. 9) and into Wednesday.

Snowfall amounts of 15 centimetres are expected near the Quebec border and south of Lake Abitibi, with areas farther west like Timmins and Cochrane likely only getting close to five centimetres.

Due to the snow, there may be reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions in some areas.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow," reads the alert.

"Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance."
