Despite bus cancellations, 220 students, family members, and special guests attended the Spring Celebration luncheon at Schumacher Public School on April 4th.  The celebration was held in the gymnasium and was decorated with spring colours and student artwork based on Aboriginal culture.

Aboriginal Elder David Fairies helped the school community welcome spring with an opening prayer.  He then explained the significance of the upcoming Pow Wow and the significance of spring. Traditional foods were served to the guests including:  goose, moose meat, bannock, and berries.

The Whitestone Cree Singers performed traditional songs and families were invited to join in the round dancing led by our Cree teacher and the Aboriginal Youth Liaison Officer for District School Board Ontario North East. The Ojibway and Cree Cultural Center were also present during the event to showcase Aboriginal artifacts and games which students learned about the previous day during an assembly.

“I really enjoyed this day,” said one parent. “It was a really welcoming atmosphere, and it was great to welcome spring together as well."

Schumacher Public School would like to thank all family members, community agencies, and our special guests for their support.  We would also like to thank Goldcorp for their generous donation and support for this event.
