NEWS RELEASE
ECOLE SECONDAIRE CATHOLIQUE THERIAULT
**************************
This Saturday, January 31, in the main lobby of École secondaire catholique Thériault, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of PAC (Community Care Project) will be preparing their luggage for their humanitarian trip to Jamaica, from February 11 to the 19.
The 22 students and 7 adults volunteers (teachers and community members) will be organizing the many donations received throughout the year in bags weighing no more than 50 pounds.
These donations of clothing, shoes, tools, school supplies, health supplies, sporting goods, toys and much more will be distributed to the needy in Jamaica.
In order to prepare for this humanitarian endeavor, the group volunteered in our community in a variety of ways: serving meals at the Lord’s Kitchen, lending a helping hand at the Timmins Foodbank, assisting the Yo-Mobile, assisting the Schumacher Lion’s Club and other community groups and helping families in need (see attached photo).
To better understand the extent of the work that will be accomplished in Jamaica and at home, the group also attended personal growth workshops that explained the concepts of world poverty and the importance of playing a role in world issues.
Many fund raising activities were also held throughout the year to raise the 60 000$ required to complete the work in our region and abroad.
Community partners such as Timmins Building Supplies were very valuable partners in many of these activities.
In Jamaica, the group will be undertaking several tasks such as completing the construction of a farm house to lodge the workers at Porziuncola, a community based farm, preparing the soil for the plantation of scotch bonnet peppers and yucca, building benches and picnic tables at Homestead, a home for delinquent and abandoned teenage girls, constructing a sand box at Glenhope orphanage, visiting schools in underprivileged areas, visiting an old age home and holding a wellness clinic for mothers and their infants.
Students and adult volunteers will be available to answer questions during this activity.
If you should require more information about this activity or the project in general, please contact Lyse Perron or Guy Chénier during the school hours at (705)267-1491.
