The public school board is looking for input from families, students and staff for its future goals.

As the District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1)’s current strategic plan ends this year, the school board has announced several in-person and virtual engagement events throughout the catchment area.

The strategic plan sets goals concerning things like attendance, student credit accumulation, and mental health for a four-year timeframe.

The events will focus on what the board needs to do to help students reach its goals from 2025 to 2029.

Director of education Lesleigh Dye said that family and student input on this plan is critical to success in the coming years.

“We really need their voice in the creation of the new plan,” Dye said at a recent board of trustees meeting.

“This goes to almost 2030. It’s a long time, so what do students need by 2030 to be successful?”

The virtual engagement session will occur on Thursday, Oct. 10, between noon and 1 p.m. Those interested in attending can join here.

The in-person events will be held in each region of DSB1’s catchment area.

For the southern region, the meeting will take place at Englehart High School which is located at 61 4th St, Englehart, Ont. on Monday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.

In the north, the in-person meeting will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Kapuskasing District High School, 61 Devonshire St, Kapuskasing Ont.

For those in the central region, including Timmins, the meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at Roland Michener Secondary School, 155 Legion Dr, South Porcupine.

"These sessions will be engaging and dynamic. Participants can expect to learn more about the purpose of a Strategic Plan and consider the strengths of our current plan," Dye said in an email to TimminsToday. "We will also ask participants to reflect on what they value most in DSB1, as well as the factors that we need to consider to support all learners’ future success.”

The board also has an online survey that is completed anonymously.
