Test your limits at new interactive exhibit (9 photos)

Beyond Human Limits has been drawing a crowd wherever it goes

Get inside the mindset of extreme athletes at a new exhibit.

Beyond Human Limits, a travelling exhibit from Science North, is set up at Science Timmins until Aug. 17.

The highly interactive exhibit showcases the science, psychology and athleticism behind extreme sports, explained Science North senior scientist Lora Clausen.

“People are really loving the opportunity to try and really test out some of the activities and not just read about it or look at it, but really get into the minds of some of the athletes and it’s really something unique and different for them to experience in these smaller communities and at these attractions that don’t typically have some of these larger exhibits. We’ve had a really great uptake from the different communities, a lot of the attractions have been almost doubling or more than doubling their attendance with the exhibit,” she said.

Some of the most popular stations are testing your balance on the slack line, testing your grip strength on the cliffhanger challenge, and using the virtual reality glasses.

“I would definitely say at least spend an hour in there really checking out, testing the different experiences. There’s a lot of background information on some well-known athletes as well in there, so it’s good to hear the stories, get to hear how they train, the recovery processes after injuries,” she said.

The exhibit's northern tour is supported by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), and FedNor.

"Science Timmins is always happy to welcome exhibits that demonstrate the role of science in our daily lives. The Beyond Human Limits exhibit will fit in nicely with our approach of bringing science to people in practical and enjoyable situations. Young and old alike will find plenty to get involved with and participate in. The partnership between Science Timmins and Science North is a great opportunity for people to enjoy science,” said Antoine Garwah, Science Timmins president and CEO, in a news release.

“Bringing this extraordinary and challenging exhibit to Timmins allows us to continue promoting the role of science in our society.”

Science Timmins open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays it’s open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission to Beyond Human Limits is $5 over and above the regular admission, which is $10 for adults, $8 for children, and free for members.
