TIMMINS - With the current animal control contract becoming 'quite burdensome', the city is taking on the work itself.

Instead of renewing the expiring contract, the City of Timmins is using the $83,893 budget to hire new staff and bring the service in-house.

"We have been experiencing a number of issues with the animal control contract. It has become quite burdensome to maintain and monitor," clerk Steph Palmateer told Timmins council on Tuesday.

For 2025, one full-time and one part-time animal control officer will be hired.

A special vehicle isn't required, said Palmateer.

A new vehicle is in the plans for 2026, which he said will be geared towards animal control needs.

Several years ago, the animal control and pound services contracts were split up. The change does not impact pound services, which will continue to be offered by the Timmins and District Humane Society.
