Ahead of what's expected to be a huge winter storm, local colleges are planning ahead.

Collège Boréal says its campuses in Timmins, Hearst and Kapuskasing are closed on March 5.

While Northern College hasn't gone quite as far, its messaging is that one or more of its campuses may have limited openings. It says an announcement will be made by 7 a.m.

If school services in Timmins are impacted, the East End Family Health Team and daycare services are still open.

Up to 30 centimetres of snow could fall between now and Thursday.

The City of Timmins has already declared a significant weather event starting at 2 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5. The city is anticipating the will be delays in plowing some streets and roads and most sidewalks. There may also be delays and/or cancellations for Timmins Transit.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Timmins, Cochrane and Iroquois Falls.

Twenty to 30 centimetres of snow is expected, with peak snowfall rates of two to four centimetres per hour. There will be poor visibility with the heavy snow and local blowing snow.

"Travel is expected to be very difficult. Road closures are likely," reads the Environment Canada notice.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve."
