TIMMINS - After nearly three decades of putting out fires, the top firefighter in the city is hanging up his gear. 

Berny Stansa, who was appointed Timmins Fire Department Chief in 2022, is retiring on March 31. The posting for his job was publicly shared today. 

Stansa has been on the job for over 27 years. He started with the fire department as a volunteer in Schumacher in the early 1990s before being hired as a full-time firefighter. Before assuming the top job, he was acting deputy chief.

"In his role as fire chief, he has been instrumental in ensuring that the city’s professional and volunteer firefighters work effectively together, and has been a positive example of public service," said Amanda Dyer, corporate communications co-ordinator, in an email.

"The City of Timmins congratulates him on this important milestone and wishes him all the best in his retirement."

The position oversees one full-time fire station with a suppression, prevention and training division, and six volunteer fire stations. The salary range is $146,172 to $182,715.
