TIMMINS - The city is getting a million-dollar boost in its cut of the province's main general grant for municipalities.

In 2025, the City of Timmins is receiving $11.8 million through the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF), which is over $1.2 million more than the $10.6 million the city received in 2024.

OMPF cash is unconditional, meaning municipalities can use it to support local priorities and community-specific needs.

Over the next two years, the grant is increased by $50 million annually. For 2025, it means the program's envelope is $550 million.

"We are listening to municipalities and have heard, particularly from small, northern, and rural municipalities, that they are facing financial challenges in delivering services to their communities," Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance, in a letter to heads of council.

In the coming months, Bethlenfalvy says ministry staff will be talking to municipal treasurers and clerks to hear their thoughts on the program.

The City of Timmins budget talks start tomorrow (Nov. 5). The increase in OMPF cash is noted as one of the highlights in the presentation.
