The Specialist High Skills Major Construction class from Timmins High and Vocational School recently accepted a challenge brought forth by the City of Timmins to provide seating for the upcoming Stars and Thunder International Fireworks Competition and Music Festival.
“We were excited to see the students take on this project to support Stars and Thunder,” said Mayor Steve Black. “The seating will provide the opportunity for people to take a rest and enjoy their meal or drink during the festival. We thank them for their effort and leadership in this project.”
As part of an ICE Challenge, promoting Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship, Mr. Barry Trebilcock’s class came together to design and build 21 picnic tables in only three weeks.
“We really appreciate this partnership with the City of Timmins,” said Trebilcock. “Projects such as these really get the students thinking, as they were responsible for the design and construction. The students were presented with the project and were responsible for all aspects, including meeting with the client to present their ideas. Building these tables also creates a great sense of pride and respect for our students.”
The students also identified that 10 per cent of these tables would need to be accessible, thus ensuring four of the 21 tables complied with accessibility standards.
Following the festival, these tables will be used at various locations throughout the City.
Mayor Black and other staff members met with the students to express their sincere gratitude, and look forward to future projects through this valued partnership.
