Wildland fires in Timmins and Iroquois Falls are among the eight new ones reported in the region yesterday (Aug. 22).
As of last night, there were 44 active fires in the northeast region, said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) in its daily update.
Timmins 16 is a fire on Highway 655 is being held at 3.1 hectares, according to the latest measurements on the Ontario forest fire map. It's located past Laforest Road on the west side of Highway 655 before Bigwater Lake. It started during the noonhour on Aug. 22.
Big Water Campground had issued a notice to campers yesterday to stay off the lake and allow the waterbombers to fill up. Last night, campers were also put on notice that they may have to evacuate at a moment's notice.
"This fire received joint response with the municipality in addition to aerial fire suppression support," reads the Aug. 22 MNRF update.
Cochrane 38 is a fire about 1.5 kilometres south Nellie Lake that started around 6 p.m. on Aug. 22. It's located one kilometre north of Jacobs Hill Road and 6.7 kilometres west of Iroquois Falls. It's about one hectare and not under control.
The other fires in the Northeast Region that were confirmed by early yesterday evening are:
- Timmins 15 - A 0.3 hectare wildland fire that is under control. This fire is located north of Hoodoo Lake, approximately 15 kilometres southeast of Foleyet.
- Cochrane 36 - A 0.2 hectare wildland fire that is under control. This fire is located approximately 42 kilometres north of Cochrane.
- North Bay 13 - Was a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is now out.
- Sudbury 29 - A 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is being held. This fire is located approximately 5.5 kilometres from the intersection of Highways 69 and 637.
- North Bay 14 - A 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control. This fire is located on an island on Lake Temagami, approximately 28 kilometres west of Temagami.
- Cochrane 37 - A 1 hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control. This fire is located approximately 10.5 kilometres west of Highway 652, about 88 kilometres northeast of Cochrane.
A fire of note for the MNRF is Kirkland Lake 5, which started on Aug. 5.
It's about 80 kilometres west of Latchford, north of Stull Lake and southeast of McKee Lake. It was last measured at 889 hectares and is not under control.
"FireRanger crews and helicopters with bucketing capabilities continue to work on this fire," says the MNRF.
The fire hazard in most of the Northeast Region is high.
"There is an extreme fire hazard in the Far North, including Peawanuck. There is a moderate fire hazard along the Highway 651 corridor, around Kapuskasing, and for areas east of the Highway 11 corridor between Temagami and Gravenhurst. There is a low fire hazard for the southeastern point of the Northeast Region," reads the update.
