The Timmins Police service responded to an “animal in distress” call for service yesterday evening at a Dwyer Street residence in Schumacher.

Once on scene, a six-pound bear cub, apparently orphaned, could be heard crying out from a make shift hiding place within a section of the residence.

The bear was located by the responding Timmins Police Service officer.

A cursory search of the immediate area for the mother was unsuccessful.

Given the cub’s size and age and fearing that it would not be able to survive on its own, a decision was made to have the cub “taken into custody.”

Appropriate arrangements were made with the MNRF and the cub is to be transported to a black bear rehabilitation facility near Huntsville, Ontario, in the next day or so.

The Timmins Police Service wish to make it quite clear that, despite the lengthy and legendary minor hockey history in the area, this is not a legitimate Schumacher Bear.
