TIMMINS -  A local student has picked up a scholarship from a provincial non-profit.

Jack Heikkila of Timmins has been awarded a $3,000 Municipal Retirees Organization Ontario (MROO) scholarship. He is currently studying biochemistry, immunology and physiology at the University of Toronto.

The other scholarship winner in Zone 7 (Northern Ontario) is Espanola's Olivia Gilbert, who's studying nursing at Loyalist College.

In total, the MROO handed out $113,000 to 36 students across the province. The recipients are family members of current MROO members.

"These students were chosen based on their academic achievements and efforts to give back to their communities," said Keith Robicheau, MROO president, in a news release.

"MROO's mission is to support our members and their families and improve the lives of all Canadians. We hope these scholarships will support each recipient in their studies and help them to achieve their academic and future career goals."
