The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) says Justin Trudeau did more to help improve the quality of First Nations in his decade as prime minister than any prime minister in Canadian history.

On Monday, Trudeau announced he'll resign as prime minister after the Liberal Party of Canada chooses his successor. Parliament is also prorogued until March 24.

AFN Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak shared her thoughts on Trudeau in a Facebook post.

“While many generational and rights challenges remain unresolved, the Prime Minister has been an ally for meaningful reconciliation and set a new standard for future prime ministers to exceed,” she wrote.

“We look forward to working with him, his replacement and all leaders in Ottawa over the coming year to pass outstanding First Nation water legislation, include First Nations in Canada/U.S. border discussions, respond to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on First Nations policing and improve Canada’s mandate for long term reform of Canada’s racist child welfare system.”
