Update on Hollinger Park expected later this week

Tear down should be finished tomorrow

The City of Timmins is waiting until teardown is complete on a section of Hollinger Park before assessing the state of the field.

Over the weekend, Rock on the River Reconnect was held on the field next to the ball diamond.

There has been remediation work at the park in recent years. That work included removing contaminated soil and the proper capping of the park, which according to a 2019 staff report included imported soil, a geotextile layer, black muck and hydroseed.

The first large event held on the field since the work was completed was muddy. The ground was saturated with water, with large sections of mud and puddles. The weather leading up to it was rainy and it rained heavily the first night of the festival.

For the second night, over 100 bales of straw were spread on the field to help people walk.

TimminsToday reached out to the City of Timmins for an update on the field after the festival.

"Tear down is currently underway at Hollinger Park and I’ve been asked to hold off on media inquiries until it’s complete and they can assess the field. Tear down should be finished end of day Wednesday," said Amanda Dyer, communications co-ordinator.
