Walkers and cyclists using the Mountjoy Historical Conservation Area will notice more upgrades being completed throughout the fall. The Mattagami Region Conservation Area (MRCA) would like to recognize the generous support of the Timmins Chamber of Commerce Business Take the Lead program in funding these upgrades. Bridges along the walking trail are being replaced, new signage is being installed and new garbage cans have been added to the park.

“Timmins businesses are passionate about the community, which is why the Timmins Chamber launched the Business Takes the Lead program in 2012,” says Dan Ayotte, Chair of the Business Take the Lead Committee. “By funding local scholarships and one major community improvement project every year, this program helps local businesses to work together to make a difference in a significant way. Over the last five years, Business Takes the Lead has led to the establishment of a business centre at the Victor M. Power Airport, and the construction of a new promenade on the south shore of Gillies Lake. The Timmins Chamber is proud to continue this important tradition by supporting the restoration of the Mountjoy Historical Park.”

The Mountjoy Historical Conservation Area is located on the banks of the Mattagami River and provides seven hectares of beautiful greenspace. The area features walking trails, public washrooms, sports fields and plenty of parking. It also has great views of the Mattagami River with convenient access if you want to launch a canoe or kayak.

The MRCA is a community-based environmental protection agency that has been actively involved in the management and protection of our watershed resources for over 50 years. Our goal is to make sure we have a healthy environment in which to work and play both now and in the years to come.

With 650 members, the Timmins Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest accredited chambers of commerce with distinction in northeastern Ontario. As the city’s “Voice of Business” since 1949, its advocacy and policy initiatives focus on ensuring a positive business climate in the City of Timmins. Because Chamber members are also residents, coaches, and community leaders, they support the community through the Business Takes the Lead program to help make Timmins a better place to live, work, and play.
