The company that operates the Twin Falls dam in Iroquois Falls is asking the public in the area to exercise caution and due care on the water as it deals with a partial breach of the dam and a temporary increase in water flow.
A memo was sent by H2O Power on Wednesday that was shared by the township of Black River-Matheson, via its Facebook page.
Drone footage shared on Facebook yesterday by user Blade Cashmore shows a great deal of water flowing over the dam, away from construction on the other side of the facility.
In the memo, the company said the breach occurred while it was making a repair to concrete at the site. No injuries have occurred as a result of the breach and the risk to the surrounding community is low, the company said.
“However, this is a developing situation that we continue to monitor,” said H2O in the memo.
The increased water flowing over the dam is similar to what would be seen during spring runoff, said the company in the memo.
That temporary increased flow is necessary for the management of the incident, said the company.
“H2O Power strongly advises all residents and river users to exercise caution and appropriate due care while near or on Lake Abitibi and the Abitibi River system and its associated waterways,” said the company in the memo.
Village Media will have more information on this incident as it develops.
