Voter turnout was up in these two Northern ridings

Here's how many people voted in Timiskaming-Cochrane, Mushkegowuk-James Bay

Voter turnout increased in the Ontario election for the Timiskaming-Cochrane and Mushkegowuk-James Bay ridings.

The unofficial voter turnout in the Feb. 27 election was 51.76 per cent in Timiskaming-Cochrane and 42.35 per cent in Mushkegowuk-James Bay.

Elections Ontario had 49,278 registered voters on the list in Timiskaming-Cochrane and 25,504 ballots were cast. In the 2022 election, the local voter turnout was 42.61 per cent, with 22,936 voters.

There were 18,755 registered voters on the list in Mushkegowuk-James Bay and 7,943 votes were cast. In the 2022 election, the local voter turnout was 39.40 per cent, with 7,283 voters.

The breakdown of the Timiskaming-Cochrane votes is:

  • NDP John Vanthof - 11,245 or 44.09 per cent of the votes
  • PC Tory Delaurier - 9,632 or 37.77 per cent of the votes 
  • Liberal Rick Ellsmere -  2,472 or 9.69 per cent of the votes 
  • Green Kris Rivard - 1,370 or 5.37 per cent of the votes 
  • New Blue Stephen MacLeod - 785 or 3.08 per cent of the votes

The breakdown of the Mushkegowuk-James Bay votes is:

  • NDP Guy Bourgouin - 3,606 or 45.40 per cent of the votes
  • PC Dave Plourde - 3,602 or 45.35 per cent of the votes 
  • Liberal Kyle Allen -  614 or 7.73 per cent of the votes 
  • Green Catherine Jones - 121 or 1.52 per cent of the votes 

Provincially, the unofficial voter turnout was about 45.4 per cent. 

While the numbers used in this story for the 2022 election are confirmed, the 2025 election data aren't official yet. The number of registered voters for yesterday's election doesn't include people who registered on voting day.
