A vigil and walk are marking the 20th anniversary of when a Timmins woman was last seen.

Pamela Holopainen was 22 years old when she was last seen leaving a house party in December 2003.

On Dec. 14, 2023 — which marks two decades since she disappeared —  people are walking from Vipond Road, where she went missing, and walking to the Timmins Native Friendship Centre (TNFC) on Kirby Avenue. The streets will be closed to allow for the event, which starts at 3 p.m.

Organizers are expecting about 30 people, according to a letter sent to Timmins council.

"That's a solid event ... hand-in-hand with (missing and) murdered Indigenous women and girls because events like that shouldn't happen in our community or period, really," said Coun. Cory Robin at the Nov. 28 Timmins council meeting.

Holopainen's sister Vanessa Brousseau has been a vocal advocate for sister's case and in raising awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.
